Location: Sham Tseng Sewage Treatment Works

Introduction: WYE was responsible for executing a comprehensive control system modernization, database optimization, and high-availability infrastructure upgrade across the Sham Tseng Sewage Treatment Works (STW) and its associated remote pumping stations. The project established a centralized gateway tier and a redundant server architecture, transitioning the network from a fragmented data-acquisition setup into a highly resilient system without disrupting active operations.

The Work

  • Control Room Architecture Modernization: Restructured the data transmission pathways from remote field controllers to the central monitoring systems. Displaced the legacy, non-redundant, and fragmented SCADA (WinCC) and MACS (InTouch) communication topologies by deploying two centralized, high-performance industrial server gateways to function as multi-protocol communication hubs.

  • High-Availability Redundancy Deployment: Configured the industrial gateways as a synchronized redundant pair utilizing a dedicated cross-linked synchronization pathway to ensure instantaneous automated failover (Failover Mechanism). Integrated communication drivers capable of natively processing industrial open standards (OPC UA, OPC DA, OPC HDA) and proprietary protocol suites (Wonderware SuiteLink, DDE) to ensure backwards compatibility with legacy field hardware.

  • Database Refactoring & Disaster Recovery: Executed a comprehensive database purge within the MACS system to eliminate orphaned tags, redundant graphics windows, and deprecated background scripts. Formulated a decentralized disaster recovery matrix by capturing full bare-metal disk images for all critical server nodes and distributing clones across more than 20 independent offline physical storage media.

Result

Eliminates single points of failure across the Sham Tseng plant and remote pumping stations, securing continuous process visibility and operational data flow. It reclaims system memory, optimizes database capacity, and enables rapid localized restoration within minutes in the event of hardware failures.
